This stein is the eighth edition in the limited-edition series entitled "Gennany's Most Beautiful Citadels, Castles, and Buildings" The Brandenburg Gate of Berlin has been a witness to the ascents and descents in Germany's political, social and economic history throughout the past 200 years.
Construction of the gate began in 1788 and was completed in 1791. The plans were drawn by the architect Carl Gottfried Langhans, whose design was heavily influenced by the entrance to Akropohs in Athens, Greece. The crowning finale to the construction was the placement of a statue at the top of the structure in 1793. This statue, created by Gottfried Schadow, is known as 'Quadriga of Victory" and depicts Eirene, the Greek goddess of peace, in a chariot being pulled by four horses.
In 1806 Napoleon Bonaparte had the Quadriga removed and brought to Paris after his victory over Prussia. It was returned to Berlin in 1814. The Brandenburg Gate proved its resilience again by withstanding heavy damage during World War 11, and being fully restored in 1957 and 1958.
The stein's body was sculpted in full and prominent panoramic relief style. The stein is made of finest-grade stoneware and is entirely hand painted. On top of the pewter lid is a hand painted resin miniature of the gate, made in England. Limited edition of 9,000 individually numbered pieces. Certificate of Authenticity.
